A meeting for public comment on Big Basin’s General Plan.
Sunday, 14 – Big Basin Redwoods State Park, “Romance in the Redwoods” 11:00 a.m.
On this easy, one-hour walk you'll learn about the courtship behaviors of some of the park's
most fascinating plants and animals. Join a Big Basin docent and discover how similar--and
dissimilar--we are from our redwood neighbors! Although material is scientific in nature, the
subject matter may be more appropriate for mature audiences. For added fun bring a picnic
lunch to share with your sweetie in the redwoods afterwards! Meet at Park Headquarters at
11:00 am. The park is located 9 miles outside of Boulder Creek on Hwy 236. More

Will Rogers in “Jes’ Call Me Jim” (1920) Silent Movie Showing at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Visitors Center, 4 p.m.

A romantic Comedy-drama with a forest background, also starring Irene Rich and Jimmie Rogers (Will’s son).  The Big Trees appear in several key scenes.  Felton and Santa Cruz locations also appear.

Monday, 8 – State Park Advocacy Day, Sacramento
This is an opportunity for Mountain Parks Foundation members to meet with State Legislators to discuss issues relating to the State Parks. Toy Trains Rolling in the Redwoods

March 20-April 11, 2010 Open Daily 11am-5pm
Join Mountain Parks Foundation, the Over the Hill Gang and California State Parks for a retro-rendezvous of railroads. O-Scale (classic Lionel type) toy trains depicting railroads from the 1800s to present day and beyond. See steam and diesel engines pulling freight and passengers with flashing headlights, engines roaring and smoke billowing.

This layout features trains winding and chugging through miniature redwoods, towns, the enchanted wilderness, a space base, a construction site, bridge, tunnel and more. The young and young at heart can operate trains and accessories, including an operating crane, a marble maze, and 4 different tracks on a 8x20 layout or just watch in delight! Admission is FREE – Parking $10 FREE. Snacks and drinks are available in the Nature Store.


Saturday, 27 – Mary Pickford in “A Romance of the Redwoods” (1917) Silent Movie Showing at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Visitors Center, 4 p.m.

“America’s Sweetheart” playing an adult in a drama of old California, directed by C. B. DeMille.  The Big Trees and the sand hills of Zayante are featured backgrounds.

Saturday, 1 – Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, “Bug Day” 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.bee
Come on kids, let’s go buggy! Make new discoveries about a wide variety of bugs through interactive games, puppet shows, art projects, nature walks, and displays. Kids can earn a degree in “Bugology” as they find out about the diversity of wildlife found in this park. The main entrance to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is located off of Highway 9 in Felton. Sunday, 9 – Big Basin Redwoods State Park, “Mother’s Day Walk: Women of Big Basin” 
11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Celebrate Mother’s Day in the park by honoring the spirited women who lived in, worked in and fought for the Basin throughout its history. Meet pioneer homemaker Alice Maddock; Josephine McCrackin, the “Savior of the Redwoods” and Harriet “Petey” Weaver, the first female Ranger. Stroll through the magnificent redwoods on this half-mile, one-hour guided walk. Meet at Park Headquarters for the 11:30 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. tour. Wheelchair and stroller accessible. Saturday, TBA - Partners’ Event: Picnic at Henry Cowell Redwoods State ParK, 6:00 p.m.

The Partners will be treated to a gourmet picnic to thank them for their support. State Park leaders from the Santa Cruz District will be at this event to talk about the district and to answer questions.

Saturday-Sunday, 15-16 – Big Basin Redwoods State Park, “Wings Over the Basin” (Event schedule TBA)
This weekend is in honor of Big Basin birds, and those who love them. Highlights include
Campfire Programs and a Marbled Murrelet Survey. Early Morning Bird Walks will be offered
for beginners and enthusiasts alike. Special camping arrangements can be made by calling
(831)338-8883. Presented in collaboration with the Santa Cruz Bird Club. The park is
located 9 miles outside of Boulder Creek on Hwy 236.

Saturday-Sunday, 19-20 – Crazy Hat Days  10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
Craft faire, crazy hat contests, local vendors, kids crafts and live music.  Docent walks will be coordinated and available.

The oral storytelling tradition comes to life with the ancient redwood forest as a backdrop.
Events throughout the weekend include Big Basin Nature Tails for children of all ages, guided
walks that spin a yarn along the trail and a Storyteller Showcase in the historic Campfire
Center. Presented in collaboration with South Bay Storytellers. The park is located 9 miles

Saturday, 11 – Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, “Ohlone Day”  10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Celebrate the Ohlone People of the past with those of the present at Ohlone Day.  You will see traditional dancers and Ohlone demonstrators will share traditional basketry, songs, stories, tools, musical instruments, soap root brushes, language and history.  You can throw an atlatl, make a tule craft, play Ohlone games and try your hand at fire making.  The main entrance to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is located off of Highway 9 in Felton.  For more information, please call (831)335-7077.

Saturday, 9 – 16th Annual Lobster Feed, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park  4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park, “The Missing Arm of William Waddell”
6:30 p.m. registration begins

History takes a tall tale twist as the saga of this early pioneer unfolds. The silly, slightly haunting tours around the redwood loop trail begin at 7:00 pm. Enjoy the redwoods on a fall night with music, storytelling and “Ranger Apples” around the campfire.
